Independent investigation and technical advice when something has gone wrong

Third-party investigation Damage & repair supervision Condition assessment

When cargo is damaged, a vessel is involved in an incident, or a purchase decision has to be made under time pressure, what you need is an independent technical account of what actually happened — documented well enough to stand up in front of an insurer, a counterparty or a court.

DENIS attends as a neutral third party. We have no commercial interest in the outcome, we report what we find, and we state clearly what could not be examined. More than 30 years of seagoing and technical management experience sits behind every assessment.

What we are instructed to do

Six areas of work, each ending in a documented report you can act on or rely on in a claim.

Accident investigation (cargo & ship) as third party Independent investigation instructed by owners, charterers, insurers or their legal advisers. We establish the sequence of events, secure the evidence and identify the technical root cause.
Investigation of sea accidents Groundings, collisions, cargo shift, heavy-weather damage, machinery failure and pollution incidents — examined against the vessel’s documentation, records and physical evidence.
Damage & repair supervision Attendance during repair so that the work carried out matches the work agreed and invoiced. Scope verification, progress monitoring and a final condition record on completion.
Pre-purchase condition assessment A structured technical picture of the vessel before you commit — hull and structure, machinery condition, class and certificate status, and the findings that should shape the price.
Condition survey (hull & cargo holds) Assessment of hull structure, coatings, hatch covers and cargo hold condition — including hold cleanliness and readiness before loading a sensitive cargo.
Technical support Marine engineering support for repair, operation and condition monitoring, arrangement of independent dry docks in Turkey and Europe, and emergency spare parts sourcing and supply.

Findings are recorded photographically on site, with position, scale and date.

Independent by instruction

Why a third-party investigation carries weight

In a dispute, an assessment is only as useful as its independence. A report produced by a party with an interest in the answer will be challenged — and usually discounted.

We attend as an appointed third party. Our instruction is stated openly in the report, findings of fact are kept separate from opinion, and limitations are recorded rather than glossed over. That is what makes a report usable by an insurer, a P&I club or a tribunal.

  • Evidence secured on site — photographs, measurements, samples, and the vessel’s own records and logs before they are dispersed.
  • Fact separated from opinion — so the reader can see exactly what was observed and what is professional assessment.
  • Technical root cause — not just what failed, but why, and what would prevent a recurrence.
  • Chain of custody maintained for any sample drawn and sent for independent laboratory analysis.

Evidence has a short life. Cargo is discharged, damage is repaired, the crew is relieved and records are overwritten. The earlier a surveyor attends, the more of the picture can still be established — which is why an early call costs less than a late one.

How an investigation runs

The same four stages whether the instruction comes from an owner, a charterer or an insurer.

01
Instruction & scope Tell us the vessel, port, what has happened and who is instructing. We confirm attendance, scope and cost basis in writing before we start.
02
Attendance & evidence We attend as early as access allows, photograph and measure the damage, and secure documents, records and samples while they still exist.
03
Technical analysis Findings are examined against the vessel’s documentation, cargo papers, stowage and lashing arrangements, weather data and any laboratory results.
04
Report & conclusions You receive findings, photographic evidence, stated limitations and — where instructed — our opinion on cause and on preventive measures.

Condition and repair work in the field

Two assignments that are almost always time-critical and rarely worth doing remotely.

Condition survey — hull & cargo holds

We assess hull structure and coatings, hatch cover condition and weathertightness, and the state of the cargo holds — including cleanliness and readiness before a sensitive cargo is loaded.

A survey records the condition found at that time and place, in the areas that were safely accessible. Anything that could not be examined is stated in the report as a limitation, not left unmentioned.

Damage & repair supervision

Repair invoices are easy to inflate and difficult to verify after the fact. We attend during the work to confirm that the agreed scope is what is actually carried out, and record progress as it happens.

We also arrange independent dry docking at yards in Turkey and elsewhere in Europe, and source emergency spare parts where a delay would keep the vessel off service.

When to call us

If one of these applies, an early call is almost always cheaper than a late one.

Cargo has been found damaged, short or contaminated on discharge
The vessel has grounded, made contact, or sustained heavy-weather damage
Cargo has shifted, or lashing and securing is in question
A repair yard’s proposed scope or final invoice does not look justified
You are about to buy a vessel and need an independent technical picture
A claim is being prepared or defended and needs technical substance

Something has happened and you need it documented properly

Send us the vessel, the port and a short description of the incident. We will come back with availability, scope and a cost basis — and tell you straight away if the assignment is one we should not take.

Marine Consulting: Expertise for Safe and Efficient Maritime Operations

Marine consulting plays a vital role in supporting the maritime industry by providing specialized knowledge, strategic guidance, and technical expertise. In an environment where safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance are paramount, marine consultants help organizations navigate complex operational and commercial challenges.

From vessel operations to port management, marine consultants offer a wide range of services tailored to the needs of shipowners, charterers, insurers, and logistics providers. These services often include risk assessments, feasibility studies, operational optimization, and advisory on international maritime regulations. Their insights enable clients to make informed decisions while minimizing risks and costs.

One of the key areas of marine consulting is safety and compliance. With strict international standards governing maritime activities, consultants ensure that vessels and operations meet the requirements set by organizations such as the IMO. This includes audits, safety management system evaluations, and environmental compliance, all of which are essential for smooth and lawful operations.

Marine consultants also play an important role in incident investigation and claims support. In the event of accidents, cargo damage, or disputes, their independent assessments provide clarity and help stakeholders resolve issues efficiently. Their expertise is particularly valuable in identifying root causes and recommending preventive measures.

As the maritime industry evolves, marine consulting increasingly focuses on sustainability and digital transformation. From reducing emissions to implementing smart technologies, consultants guide companies toward more future-ready operations.

Ultimately, marine consulting is about delivering confidence in a complex and ever-changing industry. By combining technical expertise with practical experience, marine consultants help ensure that maritime operations remain safe, compliant, and economically viable.
