About DENIS

When you instruct DENIS, you are instructing the surveyor — not a call centre

DENIS stands for Deutschland Nautical Inspection Services. We are an independent marine survey and consultancy practice in Bremen, built on more than 30 years of practical maritime experience with direct involvement across a range of vessel types and shipping operations.

That background is the point. Understanding vessel operations, inspections and technical problems is not something learned from a manual — it comes from the day-to-day realities of the industry, and it is what allows an assessment to be useful rather than merely correct.

We know what shipowners, ship managers, charterers and technical managers are actually deciding when they instruct a survey, and how much reliable information, accurate assessment and a timely answer are worth when commercial interests are exposed.

The surveyor

In this industry a report carries the weight of the person who signed it. So here is who signs ours.

Founder & principal surveyor

More than three decades in shipping, with seagoing command experience and direct involvement in vessel operations, inspections and technical management. That combination is why an assessment from DENIS reflects what actually happens on board and on the quay, rather than what should happen in theory.

How we work

Quality, transparency and professional commitment are easy to claim. These are the four things we actually do differently.

Independence that is stated, not assumed Our instruction is named openly in every report. We do not accept an assignment where a conflict of interest would prevent us from reporting objectively, and our fee never depends on the outcome of a survey or a claim.
Findings separated from opinion A report should let the reader see exactly what was observed and, separately, what is professional assessment. Mixing the two is how reports get discounted the moment they are examined.
Limitations recorded, not hidden A tank that could not be sounded, a space that was not opened, an area that was unsafe — each is stated in the report. We would rather give you a report with honest gaps than one implying a completeness it does not have.
You hear it while it still matters Where an operational or commercial decision depends on a finding, we tell you on site or immediately afterwards. A report a week later is documentation; a call from the quay is a decision you can still act on.
What a long-term partner means

What you can expect — and what we will not do

Being clear about both is what makes the first one credible.

What you can expect
  • Scope, method and cost basis confirmed in writing before attendance
  • Attendance outside office hours, at weekends and on public holidays
  • Photographic evidence with position, scale and date on every finding
  • A direct line to the surveyor who attended, not to an account manager
  • The same method and detail at both ends of a charter
What we will not do
  • Take an assignment where a conflict of interest prevents objective reporting
  • Accept a fee that depends on the outcome of a survey or a claim
  • Report on a space, tank or area we were not able to examine
  • Present a survey as a guarantee of condition, seaworthiness or fitness for purpose
  • Accept a nomination we cannot properly resource — we say so at once instead
Working on board during a survey

Start with a conversation, not a contract

Tell us what you are trying to establish and we will tell you which survey actually answers it — including when the answer is that you do not need us. Credentials and a full CV are available on request before you instruct.
